Defense Department Investigation Finds Hegseth Placed Troops in Danger with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by disclosing secret information in a private Signal group, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The chat group in dispute contained details about a planned airstrike in Yemen against Houthi militants. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other officials in the group reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for transmitting sensitive material.

Potential Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the material he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Response

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the mission. He added that he had the right to declassify material and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be made public in the coming days.
